Portable and on-line compressed air flow meter
May 2005
Flow Measurement & Control
Compressed air is an expensive medium to produce. 10% of electricity consumed in industry is used to generate compressed air. Knowing the consumption and quality of compressed air is vital for the cost-efficient running of production plants. Consequently, CS Systems has introduced a sensor that measures the flow and volume flow of compressed air systems. The new VA-300 is robust, easy to install and is suitable for portable and stationary measurements.
The robust VA-300 flow sensor is based on the calorimetric principle. Here, a measuring element is heated and the cooling effect of the passing airflow is a direct indication of the flow of air in the pipe. The sensor is designed in such a way, that it can be inserted into the piping during production, under pressures up to 50 bar, through the use of standard ball valves.
Additionally, this unit is manufactured with a laser engraved ruler on the stem that guides the user to the correct insertion depth for accurate measurements as well as a safety ring, which prevents the sensor from shooting out under pressure when being removed. Consequently, installation and calibration of the sensor is uncomplicated.
For stationary applications the VA-300 can be supplied complete with a wall-mounted flow rate indicator, which has a two-line display of actual and total flow. Alternatively, only the sensor can be purchased for portable applications, which is then connected to the portable testo 400 reference instrument. Here, it is also possible to scale the measurements and log the values over time.
The VA-300 has a measuring range up to 240 m/sec and a pressure range up to 5 MPa. It is microprocessor controlled, software calibrated and provides a scaled 4 to 20 mA output for the airflow as well as a pulse per m3. CS Systems instruments are exclusively distributed in South Africa by UniTemp.
