Solutions for contamination analysis

May 2005 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Contamination analysis of machined or manufactured parts, chemicals, fuels, hydraulic fluids, water, or other liquid samples can be accomplished with Millipore's contamination analysis monitors and kits, either in the laboratory or in the field.

Millipore's fluid contamination analysis kit uses 47 mm membranes and conforms to standard contamination test procedures such as ARP-598 (hydraulic fluids), ASTM-D2276 (aviation turbine fuels), and federal standard 791a (lubricants, liquid fuels, and related products). The kit includes all apparatus and expendable materials for approximately 600 tests.

Fluid sampling kits for liquid sampling through 37 mm monitors can be used for sampling turbine fuels, water or other liquids through Millipore's contamination analysis monitors, prior to gravimetric or colorimetric analysis. A stainless sampler assembly plugs into the quick-release valve installed in the system line and a measured quantity of liquid passes through the monitor filter. A valved syringe serves as a pump to remove residual liquid from the monitor.

For gravimetric analysis, matched-weight monitors may be used to eliminate test filter pre-weighing before sampling in gravimetric analysis. Each monitor contains two filters matched in weight to within 0,1 mg. The sample passes through both, but upper (test) filter retains all contaminants. The difference in filter weights, after drying, equals the weight of contaminant in sample.

Millipore's disposable, pre-assembled contamination analysis monitors have Average Background particle Count (ABC values) marked on each package. A special thick pad supports the filter at high differential levels. Monitors are fitted with gravimetric analysis filters and refillable MF-Millipore MCE and PTFE membranes.

For colorimetric fluid contamination analysis, Millipore's patch test kit monitors particulate contamination rapidly in hydrocarbon-based hydraulic fluids, bulk chemicals, boiler water and lubricating oils. The patch test kit includes filter colour rating and particle assessment scales to recognised standard contamination levels. The kit detects significant changes in cleanliness through dependable and sensitive test results and includes filters for 100 tests.

ASTM, NIOSH, OSHA, ACGIH have determined methods for monitoring compounds in liquids. Millipore's Particle Monitoring Guide provides a summary of 150 different compounds, along with the analytical technology, regulatory agencies and method specified, and with the recommended Millipore product for performing the analysis. The particle monitoring guide has complete selection and application information for membrane filter discs.
