Versatile valve positioner

March 2005 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

The FY301 microprocessor-based positioner provides fast and accurate positioning of diaphragm or cylinder actuators. The FY301 produces a pressure output as required to position a control valve according to a 4 to 20 mA input signal from a controller. Compact and easy to maintain and to adjust, its remote communication is based on HART protocol, facilitating an easy interface between the field and the control room and several interesting features that considerably reduce installation, operation and maintenance costs. Part of Smar's complete 301 series of smart devices, the FY301's local calibration and parameter settings may also be adjusted without the use of external devices.

Eliminating many mechanical parts seen in other positioners, the FY301 has a number of advantages. The valve position reading uses a magnetic Hall effect sensor, without the need for levers or potentiometers. Higher reliability is possible, as there are fewer parts to wear; it is safer since there are less moving parts and higher accuracy since there is less dead band from mechanical imprecision.

The FY301 directly senses longitudinal or rotary movement based on the Hall effect. The Hall effect sensor allows a remote mounting, using an up to 20 m length extension cable. Such features are suitable for high temperature applications and those under heavy vibration.

Valve characteristics, action, damping, etc. are all configured with software instead of changing mechanical cams and springs. Changing damping, action or characteristics between linear, equal percentage, hyperbolic (quick opening) makes the FY301 quite flexible.

The FY301 is available as a 4-20 mA + Hart communication or Fieldbus or Profibus. If only a 4 to 20 mA device is purchased it can be up graded to Profibus or Fieldbus by just purchasing a new card.
