Cooling for plastics machine controls
March 2005
Enclosures, Cabling & Connectors
Elen Enclosures can offer a number of maintenance-free solutions for the plastics industry. The Pucel-Nano series of nano-coated, filterless cooling units and air-to-water heat exchangers have been used throughout Europe on machine control panels to solve overheating problems and to minimise expensive downtime and material wastage. Of special interest here are the LW air-to-water heat exchangers that use chilled water (which is normally available for the cooling of moulds on injection machines) as cooling medium. This is a very efficient and economical way of controlling panel cooling. The internal (cold) and external (warm) side are completely separated and the warm side's cooling cartridge is covered with a special coating that repels dusts, liquid droplets and fibres. There are no filters to change or clean. The same goes for the LK-Series electrically operated, compressor type refrigeration cooling units.
In critical applications where the space is limited and cooling is vital to the operation of the machine the FANDIS TCU-Series of thermoelectric (Peltier) panel coolers can be used. Where clean and dry compressed air is available the most economical and totally maintenance-free solution to cooling is the use of the Arizona V-Series of Vortex cabinet coolers and Vortex tubes (see picture) - which are very compact and have no moving parts. The Vortex tube splits a stream of compressed air into a cold and hot fraction.
