Omniflex has developed a Scaleable Telemetry Outstation for GSM cellular networks to support short message service (SMS) transmission of data from remote outstations that require monitoring and control. The suitability of GSM networks has become a reality due to their coverage, reliability and low cost of ownership comments Ian Loudon, Omniflex sales manager. There is no infrastructure cost to consider as would be the case with house radio-based systems and monitoring may be extended countrywide - in fact it is possible to use the technology outside the country's borders too. A simple SIM card contract all that is required.
The system
* Modular Programmable M2G RTUs up to 12 universal inputs and single serial port for third party device interfacing. The port comes standard with Modbus.
* An OPC server for interface to scada or MES systems.
* Direct SMS to service personnel cellular phones with required acknowledgements or escalation to another phone takes place.
The Omniflex OPC server and RTU outstations integrate to form an easy to use front end for scada monitoring systems. Reporting by exception (change of state) or on a time cycle basis the outstations are capable of interfacing to digital and analog signals or even intelligent devices with serial protocols. Modbus or custom etc, the outstations can be used in telemetry mode or as controllers at the front end. Setpoint parameter changes may be downloaded via the OPC server where and when required. Forced outputs are also a feature of the system.
M2G features universal I/O selectable to be analog input or output or digital input or output overcoming the problem associated with small I/O count systems with mixed signals. Intelligent devices can be connected via the programmable serial port - devices like flowmeters can be connected and serial data extracted.
Omniflex GSM telemetry solution using an SMS OPC server and direct SMS to cellphone
The OPC server provides the interface to any windows-based application supporting the OPC standard - for example, scada systems or asset management systems. A feature of the system is a call count monitoring system to keep a check on call traffic and provide early indication of over-use. This is especially important where change of state inputs (eg, door alarms etc) on the outstation can trigger unnecessary calls if a fault develops on a door alarm. The OPC server allows individual selection of digital input for change of state and these can be changed on-line without going out to the RTU. The M2G RTU being a small DIN rail mounted device has a GSM modem integral to the product itself with an external antenna connection.
SMS alarming
The system can be configured to send SMS alarm to service, maintenance or supervisory personnel. Using traditional alarm enunciator philosophy the receiver must respond within a reasonable time or another message is sent escalating the alarm, the next cell number on the list.
