Temperature Measurement

Tube furnace temperature datalogging system

February 2005 Temperature Measurement

Land has introduced the Cyclops DL-1000 data logging system used with Land's Cyclops 153 portable infrared thermometer for computing and logging true tube temperatures in pyrolysis and steam reforming furnaces.

The new pocket PC-based Cyclops DL-1000 datalogging and tube furnace temperature system uses a special program to correct reflection errors from hotter backgrounds when measuring catalyst tube temperatures in pyrolysis and reforming furnaces.

The system is simple to use and allows input of both tube and furnace background temperature readings together with target emissivity data, and computes the fully corrected true tube wall temperature. The background temperature reading is made and the target emissivity setting is put into the data logger, which enables the system to recalculate the target tube temperature. These readings are automatically corrected for reflection errors providing true tube temperature measurement. Tube temperatures are logged to a .txt file on the pocket PC together with the reading number, date, time of reading, emissivity value and background temperature for import into word processing and spreadsheet programs.

Temperature readings can be taken manually or on timed acquisition at intervals from 1 to 3600 s. Data files can be created and named by the user, with each session identified by a short description. The pocket PC is supplied complete with the datalogger software. Users can also perform their own software installation from a CD via a desktop PC with the USB cradle. Data file upload to a PC is managed by a simple file transfer utility, which is provided.

The system comprises a HP iPAQ Pocket PC operating the Land Cyclops DL-1000 datalogging software program, USB synchronisation cradle, ActiveSync file transfer utility and a Cyclops 153 portable infrared thermometer. Land is represented locally by Protea Automation Solutions.
