Mini-PLC with logging facility

February 2005 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers Integrated Solutions Infrastructure

Until recently standard micro PLC units did not offer the option of data logging. Vangard Digital has now developed a mini-PLC with a logging facility, providing a low-cost solution for combined data recording and control functions.

The high-speed microprocessor-based VGD-PLC1 is ideal for applications such as pump control with flow, pressure, level and runtime logging; temperature; rainfall logging and irrigation system control; chemical dosing and usage, borehole level monitoring and pump control; and motion vibration monitoring and safety stop.

The unit accepts six digital inputs, provides four 10 A relay outputs and two open collector outputs. The five analog input channels are programmable 4 to 20 mA. Up to 20 000 samples can be logged and held in the on-board 2 Mbit memory with event date and time stamp. The realtime clock is standard with the VGD-PLC1.

Programming is via the front keypad or an RS232 interface. Stored data can be uploaded to a PC/laptop or to the VGD-HHU handheld unit (supplied by Vangard) for convenient downloading to an office-based PC at a later stage. Powered from 24 V d.c. the PLC datalogger has an LCD display to facilitate direct programming as well as status and value feedback.

Vangard Digital manufactures a full range of dataloggers for all process variable requirements.
