Flow Measurement & Control

Volume flow measuring system

December 2004 Flow Measurement & Control

According to European legislation, pollutant emissions of industrial plants must be monitored, making suitable measuring systems, such as Durag's D-FL-100, necessary to continuously determine the flow velocity and the flow rate of the exhaust gas. The D-FL-100's alarm levels are pre-selectable and any alarms will be indicated inertia-free, permitting necessary interventions in the plant control system so as to comply with prescribed emission limit values.

Operating on the principle of differential pressure, the D-FL 100 units are available in two types. The D-FL 100-I is designed for flow measuring without temperature and pressure compensation and the D-FL 100-II for flow measuring with temperature and pressure compensation. The probe has two separate chambers, between which, a pressure difference, caused by the flow in the duct builds up. The differential pressure at the probe is proportional to the square of the gas speed.

The volume flow can be converted from operational to standard conditions by the D-FL 100-10 microprocessor evaluation unit. For this purpose, two additional current inputs (0 to 20 mA) for a temperature probe and a pressure probe have been provided at the evaluation unit. If an emission evaluation computer is available, the evaluation unit is not required.

Special designs are available for use in aggressive exhaust gases. A Hastelloy flow probe is recommended for heating power plants, chemical plants and in paper manufacturing. For operating temperatures of over 600°C, an Inconel flow probe is available.

The lengths of measuring ranges offered are 400 mm to 2 m, 2 to 4 m or 4 m. Exhaust gas temperature over the exhaust gas dew point is up to 320°C. An automatic backflow purging feature is available as an option.
