Tougher safety standards in the local mining industry are spurring on the development of more advanced instrumentation to act as early warning systems of potential danger situations.
Spero Group of Centurion, Gauteng, has launched a new range of flammable gas sensors, which have been designed to be compatible for use with continuous-miner machines (CMs). The new gas sensors, called the FS range, will be mounted onto CMs, collecting on-board information on gas-levels as mining progresses. The Ex ia intrinsically safe approval means the FS sensor series can be continuously operated without shutting down the power when dangerous gas levels are exceeded. The information can be relayed back to surface by using Spero's SL2000 multipurpose telemetry system, which provides two-way communication between the mobile CM and other mine infrastructure systems, including environmental monitoring and control systems. It is available in three optional signal formats:
a. 4 to 20 mA output, 3 wire
b. 0,4 to 2 mA output, 3 wire
c. 0 to 1 mA output, 3 wire
It consumes less than 25 mA over a power supply voltage range of 12 to 30 V d.c.
