Miniature sensors fit in tight spots

November 2004 Sensors & Transducers

Increasing complexity, higher levels of integration, and ongoing miniaturisation in many devices also demand ever smaller and more complex automated manufacturing equipment or assembly robots. The fibre-optic solutions or mini-sensors employed to date are often incapable of performing the required tasks, or at least not to the user's full satisfaction, because, for example, an interfering background cannot be adequately suppressed. The adjustable diffuse sensor with background suppression from the MINOS line does not exhibit these limitations.

Despite its minimum size, the sensing range or sensitivity can be adjusted on all standard sensors. In addition, these sensors are equipped with an algorithm to suppress reciprocal optical influences; a significant advantage that permits high sensor density where limited space is available. A further point of discussion in practical applications is the cable position, which under conditions of limited space, often ends up in the wrong location. This problem has been solved to the satisfaction of customers by the two housing variants: 'cable on rear' and 'cable underneath'. The fact that, despite the level of miniaturisation, no compromises were made with regard to mounting is indicated by the ability of the sensor to be mounted using a readily available M3 screw. The MINOFIX sensor holder with its ingenious, integrated cable pass-through is also available for quick and easy mounting. The MINOS family represents a complete line of sensors, ranging from diffuse sensors, to diffuse sensors with background suppression, retro-reflective sensors with polarisation filters, up to through-beam sensors.
