A new optical fibre fusion-splicing concept

Furukawa Electric has introduced the handheld S121A optical fibre fusion splicer with high-end functionality to provide the solution for FTT(x) and datacom splicing applications.
With a 13 s splice time, the S121A is easily operated. The user simply sets the fibres in place and presses a button and the entire process from fibre feed to tension test is fully automatic. A standard 62,5 mm colour LCD monitor displays a magnified image of the fibres as viewed by the CCD camera and provides simple and accurate confirmation of the splice quality.
The S121A incorporates a fibre holder system for greater ease and consistency, and thanks to its 'T-shape' design, it can be placed insides the closure and splice with very short fibre lengths. An optional heat shrink oven is available for applying protective sleeves to the splice, as well as a tool for applying non-shrink ULTRAsleeve. With its standard soft carrying case, the S121A is as portable as a camera and it can be attached to a belt for hands-free operation.
