IR thermometers are quickly becoming an essential investigative tool as more users realise they are a safe and simple way to uncover problems almost instantly.

Maintenance and process personnel, hazardous materials teams, auto technicians, and food service professionals use IR thermometers to measure surface temperature - quickly, safely and accurately. Temperature anomalies are often an indication of underlying problems, identifying temperature discrepancies quickly and safely allow appropriate restorative actions to be taken. The popularity of these thermometers continues to grow because of their ease of use, reliability and affordability.

Like traditional thermometers, IR thermometers translate hot and cold into numeric measurements. However, unlike traditional methods, an IR thermometer does not require physical contact with the object being measured. The user points the IR thermometer at the target (from distances of a few inches to more than 10 m away, depending on the model) and can immediately read the temperature in the display.

Whether an object is untouchable because of location, temperature, or material, IR thermometers can reach the target and read the temperature. Knowing the heat of an object is extremely useful, especially around liquids nearing their flash points, or on a process operating at a critical temperature. IR thermometers make it easier to detect overloaded electrical circuits or ballasts, save time when investigating suspicious odours, and quickly detect unstable processes and machinery.

Instantaneous reading and reliable results make troubleshooting quick and easy, with less chance for error. IR thermometers help process and maintenance engineers alike to quickly check their plant, giving them the information needed to assess the temperature and plan the most effective solution.

In addition, some portable IR thermometers are available with logging features so temperatures can be stored and retrieved later, which is ideal for record keeping or report-backs. Since temperature readings are repeatable with an IR thermometer, multiple measurements of the same items can show consistencies or trends.
