New turbidity meter with IR connectivity

June 2004 Flow Measurement & Control

The Hach Company, represented by PREI Instrumentation has a long and successful history with on-line low range turbidity meters. The 1720 series of low range turbidity meters (began in 1976) have been regularly upgraded and the latest 1720E turbidity meter is an online instrument designed to continuously monitor turbidity in the range of NTU 0,001 - 100 NTU.

The 1720E sensor has an SC100 controller that replaces the previous Aquatrend and power supply. The SC100 controller can be connected to two 1720E turbidity sensors, has 2 x 4 to 20 mA outputs as well as RS232 or RS485 (Modbus). It has an infrared data acquisition port (IrDA) on the front panel. What this feature will offer the customer is the ability to download all the stored data from the SC100 controller through a wireless link.

The stored data from the SC100 controller will be able to be downloaded into a palm pilot, pocket PC, or a computer through the IrDA port, and then viewed in a CSV or XML format. This software package can be downloaded from the www.hach.com site free of charge.

The 1720E turbidity meter uses a nephelometric measurement. This measures turbidity by directing an incandescent light from the sensor head assembly down into the turbidity meter body, which is scattered by suspended particles in the sample. The sensor's submerged photocell detects light scattered 90° from the incident light. The amount of light scattered is linearly proportional to the amount of turbidity in the sample.
