Cable ties and tags come out tops in SABS test

May 2004 Enclosures, Cabling & Connectors

Grafoplast Wiremarkers' range of Targa tags and sleeves and Elematic cable ties underwent a 1000 h artificial weather test carried out by the SABS. The test results were outstanding.

The results confirm that these systems can replace the more costly stainless steel marking systems that are specified in corrosive and aggressive environments such as petrochemical industries. Grafoplast manufactures the special sleeves used in the tests and the UV-stabilised cable ties by Elematic, both Italian companies. The tags inside the sleeves are locally produced, to stringent Grafoplast specifications, resulting in a VO-UL94 rating.

According to Grafoplast MD, Darryl Crampton, the 1000 h SABS test is the highest specification available. "A SANAS (South African National Accreditation System) testing method was used exposing the systems to 4 h cycles of UV light at 60°C and condensation at 50°C. The results for the tags showed very little yellowing with the text still legible, the sleeves yellowed but remained transparent and the cable ties had no visible change and only 1,4% loss in tensile strength." The evaluation method used was as per ASTM G154. Tests were performed by the Paint & Sealants Laboratory in Testing and Conformity Services at the SABS.

"We expect these systems to offer a lifespan of up to 10 years dependent on the environmental conditions," said Darryl.
