Reliable part seat monitoring

May 2004 Pneumatics & Hydraulics

From metal forming and machining to assembly automation, work-piece positioning and gap detection in very harsh operating conditions such as dirt, fluids and extreme temperatures, continue to present a challenge for project engineers.

Whether work-piece or tool, pallet or conical spindle insert, the success of the machining operation depends on exacting position monitoring with gap distances sometimes down to 0,01 mm. As well as reliably detecting and confirming the appropriate gap distances, the pneumatic backpressure measurement system is often used to blow the work surface clean.

The integrated pneumatic bridge circuit of IFM Electronic's PS7 system effectively de-couples the measurement result from the inevitable fluctuations in supply pressure. With the aid of the electronic display, a highly repeatable bridge setting can be made by adjusting the setting dial. The setting can then be documented. All adjustment and programming procedures for set-up, operation and maintenance are easily performed. The PS system can be protected both mechanically and electronically against unauthorised access.

The PS7 system provides reliable operation even with fluctuations in primary pressure. Two switch points are available for coarse or fine detection, and automatic switch point adjustment is easy using the analog input of IFM's electronic PNI pressure switch.

Continuous comparison of the preset and actual values is executed directly in the sensor, and an external analog signal from the PLC allows the acceptable range limits to automatically follow the changes in clamping pressure.
