Hearing protection permits communication

May 2004 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

Technicians and engineers working in plants with dangerously high noise levels are often faced with a problem communicating under such circumstances. Leading safety specialist, MSA Africa, has introduced Peltor Communication Sets that allow people working in noisy surroundings to communicate effectively using their two-way radios, while still protecting their hearing.

Peltor Communication Sets are headsets or earmuffs that offer protection against noise while plugging into most two-way radios, and enabling the user to hear and respond to all radio communication. Until now, frustrated individuals in noisy environments struggled to hear any contact on their radios, having only passive hearing, or even worse, chose not to wear their earplugs in favour of being able to hear their radios above factory noise levels, resulting in deafness in the long-term.

The Peltor Communication Sets provide a wide variety of options. Different sets are designed to suit the relevant working environment from the military (the camouflaged green sets, which are specifically designed to fit under ballistic helmets and are adaptable to military radio systems, as well as military approved), fire fighters (the bevelled cup design for use under fire helmets), hazmat teams (the throat microphone and earpiece to fit under hazmat kits), all broad-spectrum industries, refineries, to in fact any location which is noisy and requires people to communicate via radio. MSA Africa can provide sets for most requirements, such as hardhat mounted models, voice activated microphones, wireless technology, or intrinsically safe units.

According to Hayley Arnesen, product manager for hearing conservation at MSA Africa, the range and quality of the entire Peltor product range is exceptional and she is eager to introduce Peltor Communication Sets as it now completes the spectrum of products that MSA Africa has to offer for hearing conservation.
