Plant piping design software

March 2004 SCADA/HMI

Coade, part of Autodesk's Developer Network, has been working closely with Autodesk to determine which Autocad enhancements would be most valued by the plant design community. As a result, speed, teamwork and management have been translated into productivity improvements for process plant designers.

CADWorx Pipe 2004 is Coade's advanced piping design program for use in any size project using 3D modelling, 2D orthographics or isometrics. With the new release of AutoCAD 2004, CADWorx users can now take advantage of smaller file sizes (up to 70% reduction in size), faster load and save times and enhanced x-ref capabilities. CADWorx 2004 greatly increases the size of plant models that teams of designers can work on, simultaneously.

"Coade is known worldwide for its very popular Caesar II Stress Analysis Software," says Nick Bass of Chempute Software, the local distributor. "Coade's CADWorx Pipe is the first intelligent, fully functional, bi-directional link between a CAD and a pipe stress analysis program. Using this link, CADWorx Pipe easily creates stress isometrics, fully dimensioned and annotated with input data and/or analysis results."

Coade has included some of its own enhancements to its new CADWorx Pipe 2004 software, giving greater flexibility and speed to plant designers. These include new piping features such as specification-driven weld gaps and the option of setting individual layers for each line number. Integrated steel capabilities include stretchable and editable steel, built-in coping, built-in automatic BOM generation, and an extensive library of steel members with easy access to steel properties. A new feature adding versatility to the software is an integrated HVAC/cable tray component. These new features coupled with a full database of ready-made specifications, comprehensive component libraries, 'Point and Shoot UCS', Automatic Isometrics and BOM generation, and many more, enable even new users to AutoCAD to start producing complicated 3D plant models. 3D Models are easily converted to 2D and vice versa as elevation and section drawings are automatically produced from the 3D Model.

Also included in the new update is CADWorx P&ID 2004. The package is also compatible with (and runs within) the new AutoCAD 2004. "This is Coade's Process and Instrumentation Drawing software - a powerful yet easy-to-use package," says Bass. "This software provides fully automated drafting and editing techniques using comprehensive symbol libraries. For use with/without a database, P&ID 2004 has a high level of information access, where drawing information can be maintained in database records giving access to all parties. The new version includes enhanced copy procedures and Auto Repeat for component insertion, eliminating the need to re-select the component each time during repeated insertions.

"Coade has also concentrated on the need for designers to maintain database integrity and has included features that reduce errors and automate input. Some of the features that have been carried through to the new version are: true 'to' and 'from' process information across drawings, the ability to configure or control layers and other project settings, the tagging of components and equipment, breaking of lines automatically by placing symbols on the process line and the controlling of the process flow when using databases," Bass concludes.

Other Coade products include:

* CADWorx Loops - fast and easy to create hundreds or thousands of loop diagrams.

* PV Elite pressure vessel design and rating - Asme VIII Div 1, Div 2, PD 5500.

* Codecalc - vessel, heat exchanger and piping component analysis.

* Tank - API 650/653 oil storage tank design and analysis.
