New drives to produce better paper quality

March 2004 Motion Control & Drives

The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) received an order from the Mopak Group, Istanbul, Turkey, to supply electrical and electronic equipment for a cardboard machine in Dalaman. The modernisation project - to be completed by end of February 2004 - entails the supply of the drive system, together with basic automation technology, based on the Simatic PCS7.

The Mopak Group is the largest paper manufacturer in the Middle East. The company operates two integrated production plants for pulp, paper and cardboard in Izmir and in Dalaman in southwest Turkey, as well as one integrated production plant for hemp pulp and cigarette paper in Kastamonu in northern Turkey. The Dalaman plant produces 82 000 metric tons of pulp; 85 000 metric tons of paper, and 50 000 metric tons of cardboard per year.

By modernising the board machine, the plant aims to ensure a consistently high product quality. To achieve this goal, a precise control system for the coating machine drives is of great importance. Siemens is supplying around 45 drives units with the associated Masterdrive converters for the online coating equipment of the cardboard machine. Siemens is also supplying a further 20 drive units with the associated converters for the offline coating equipment and the wire section. A control system, based on the Simatic PCS7 and 10 operator control stations assigned to the machines will enable the drives to be monitored and controlled.
