ISO 9000 standards expired on 15 December 2003
January 2004
News
The South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) has announced that all ISO 9000:1994 certifications/registrations have ceased to have validity with effect from 15 December 2003.
This follows a statement by the International Accreditation Forum that all accredited certification/registration of Quality Management Systems to ISO 9001:1994; ISO 9002:1994 and ISO 9003:1994 will expire on 15 December 2003 in preparation for the withdrawal of those Standards by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) in favour of ISO 9001:2000.
Organisations that base their purchasing decisions on the fact that their supplier is third party ISO 9000 certified/registered are reminded that after 15 December 2003 the only recognised form of conformity of an ISO 9001 Quality Management System will be an accredited certification/registration to ISO 9001:2000.
Senior specialist: strategy and systems development in Standards SA, a division of the South African Bureau of Standards, Geoff Visser, comments: "The three-year period between the 2000 edition being published and the 15 December 2003 deadline was basically a transitional period that allowed companies to move across to the 2000 standard. From that date, the only current standard will be the ISO 9001:2000 version, with no other conflicting standards in existence." Certification bodies had to have plans in place to ensure that on 15 December 2003, all those organisations not complying had their certification withdrawn and were notified of this action on that date.
