Mobile batching trolleys solve BMS problem

September 2003 Flow Measurement & Control Access Control & Identity Management

Kvaerner, a world leading engineering and construction group, won a contract to engineer a new state-of-the-art facility in Cruiserath, near Dublin, for the pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS).

Based on Promass's superior self-drain straight tube technology, Endress + Hauser won the order to supply all Coriolis flowmeters for this new facility. Kvaerner was also attracted by the high functionality offered by the Promass 63F, such as self-monitoring alarm functions and simultaneous measurement of several process variables.

The client had a specific requirement on the 'high quality purified loop', where process vessels within the production building were charged with a precise amount of purified water. However, with close to 40 vessels, it was uneconomical to allocate one fixed flowmeter for every station. Endress + Hauser was approached with this problem and asked for suggestions. The solution came in the form of mobile batching trolleys that could be kept at various strategic locations within the production building, and then wheeled into place for use when batching was required.

Various tapping points were provided within the plant to service a group of vessels. With more than one floor and several intermediary levels, it was decided that the optimum requirement would be five mobile units. This not only provided significant cost savings, but also reduced the number of measuring points that would require maintenance and calibration.

The compact and hygienic design of the Promass batching trolleys offered quick and easy positioning, as well as simple connection to the air, water and power supplies.
