Sensor for inspecting beverage can foil seals

September 2003 Sensors & Transducers

In the last years, aluminium recycling has become fundamental and the manufacturing companies of drinks in cans have adapted themselves to the necessity of recuperating empty cans without wasting even the 'tab', which was previously stripped and thrown away. For this reason a new opening system has been created that avoids the tab's detachment, but that unfortunately dips it into the drink.

For customer hygiene requirements, some companies are orientating themselves towards the protection of the can surface. In this application an aluminium foil seal is applied, and so the presence of the seal on rotating cans before packaging becomes necessary. The difficulty lies in the number of different coloured seals used, amongst which an aluminium-coloured model (like the can) predominates. The requirement is successfully filled using the Datasensor S65 S65-PA PA-5-V09 V09-PPP colour sensor. The sensor uses the 'C' algorithm in presence of coloured seals in order to obtain a higher depth of field. Whereas the 'C+I' algorithm is used in presence of aluminium-coloured seals, where there is only a slight colour difference between the seal and the can. In both cases the can border is detected in order to activate the output only in the presence of seal foil absence or damage.
