Checking motor rotation with the 3-phase power off

August 2003 Motion Control & Drives

When installing motors on conveyor lines, pump systems, and any interconnected drives, tests can be carried out with the Toptronic T860 motor rotation tester to determine the phase sequence, the direction the motor will rotate, and confirm that no open phase is present - all before applying voltage to the motor, or even before an AC supply is available.

Available from HellermannTyton, the Toptronic type T860 3-phase tester is a three-in-one instrument. It identifies the 3-phase sequence, provides an open circuit check, and shows which way round the leads should be connected for a given rotation. Operation is simply a matter of connecting the test leads, provided with the instrument. If the power supply is available, the leads can be connected to the supply and the instrument will indicate the correct connection sequence for a given rotation. Alternatively, with no supply present, the leads can be connected to the motor terminals, and the T860 will show which way the motor will rotate at switch-on.

The instrument is designed to operate on AC supplies between 100 and 600 V, and frequencies from 40 to 70 Hz. Internal power is provided by one 006P 9 V battery. The meter has been designed and tested according to IEC Publication 348. It complies with the Safety Requirements for Electronic Measuring Apparatus, IEC-1010 (EN6 1010) and other safety standards. The instrument comes in a soft zip-up carrying case, measuring 153 x 72 x 35 mm.
