Miniature precision encoders

June 2003 Motion Control & Drives

Kubler now supplies a new low-priced high performance miniature encoder. The outside housing diameter is only 24 mm. The use of highly integrated opto Asics makes it possible to manufacture the device with shaft or hollow shaft up to 6 mm in diameter. The hollow shaft version is claimed to be the first of its size on the market. The encoder is mounted easily onto the drive shaft and is secured against rotation, eliminating the need for a coupling device. This reduces expensive mechanical failures, and minimises assembly time and expenditure. The use of optical Asics reduces the amount of circuit componentry and decreases EMC susceptibility. Push-pull output circuits with 5...24 or 8...24 V d.c. supply voltages are available. The supply inputs are short circuit protected and reverse polarity encoder is its ageing compensation device. This ensures that the device gives specified outputs after many years of operations, ie, the square wave output remains at 90° phase shift. A pulse frequency of 160 kHz enables a high accuracy also at a high number of revolutions. The IP 64 protected encoders can be used in harsh environmental conditions. All electronic components used are specified for high temperature. A temperature compensation feature ensures that no output signals are distorted throughout the temperature range -20°C to +85°C. All components are contained in a chrome-plated housing which is more resistant to oil acids than the usual housings. A special 6-fold injected string assembly industry, supply and handling machines for electronic components, test equipment, laser and inkjet printer, medical industry, packaging machines, labelling machines or also in the operation of cameras in pipe inspection machines.
