A very expensive and radiation-based radiometric level measurement system was replaced by a specially modified (and considerably more cost-effective) Krohne BM70 A radar level meter. The application required reliable level measurement of uncrushed tyres in a kiln running at a very high temperature.
The kiln is conveyor fed with tyres, and the aim is to keep the level of the tyres constant. Since process temperature in the gas room (and at the antenna) is approximately 1200°C, The antenna is equipped with a cooling system. Keeping the antenna temperature above 500°C prevents soot from accumulating on it. The antenna is also equipped with a purging system. All metallic parts were manufactured of special high temperature stainless steel 1.4841. The metaglass is above the high temperature extension piece - where it can be cooled. This special was not Ex approved.
The standard BM 70 A/BM 700 Radar level meter is designed to measure levels independent of pressure, temperature and density of the mediums concerned. The instrument is suitable for CIP/SIP cleaning methods (160/320°C). The antenna makes use of FDA-approved PTFE. Adaptable to various tank geometries, it features in-process replaceable electronics and numerous external connector options, including DIN 11851, Tri-Clamp, Varivent, etc. The BM 70 A includes communication on RS 485, Profibus-PA (Ex-i), Foundation Fieldbus (Ex-i).

A municipal utility in eastern Germany operates a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant with sustainable sludge treatment. The ultrasonic signal was being partially deflected by the wind, leading to frequent false measurements and inefficient process workflows. The problem was solved by replaced the ultrasonic level sensor with KROHNE’s OPTIWAVE 1540 non-contact radar.
