In certain applications, the visual design of an electronics cabinet plays a role no less important than that of its function. Design is concerned here with human interface, while functionality relates to the demands of the application.

In an ideal situation the two aspects can be united in a cabinet with attractive aesthetics and also a high degree of functionality. With this in mind, Schroff has developed the new Novastar platform of cabinets in aluminium for application in the measurement and control systems, laboratory and audio, video and broadcasting markets.

A single basic platform

While in the past, users would have sought special cabinets suited to specific projects, most requirements can now be met by a single platform with variable configuration options. The requirements of the market segments mentioned above are similar, which facilitates construction of a single platform. Of particular importance are an attractive appearance, high functionality and optimal accessibility for the components housed within.

However, each market segment also has particular needs of its own that must also be covered by any new platform. For example, in a laboratory situation it is also important that the cabinet be mobile, i.e. that it can be moved easily from one location to another. In audio, video and broadcasting applications there is a strong demand for flexibility in the cabinet dimensions, since highly individual, customised cabinets of various sizes and various configurations are commonly required.

Light, narrow and 19”-ready

The supporting structure of the Novastar consists of a die-cast aluminium frame and aluminium struts, whose fluted design gives them the look of classical pillars. The cladding components are not mounted on the exterior of the frame but rather within, between the frame and the struts. As a result the struts remain visible and give the cabinet its unmistakable appearance. The die-cast frame and support structure are bolted together for easy dismantling of the cabinet. Thanks to the inner position of the cladding, the cabinets – in heights between 6 U and 47 U and space-saving width of only 553 mm – are 19” compatible and offer ingress protection up to IP40.

Unlike some other cabinet concepts, in which the height is determined in standard millimetre increments based on the external dimension, the Novastar is consistently orientated to the inner dimensions in terms of the height units of the 19” equipment. This means that 19” components fit flush vertically with the interior of the frame and unwanted spaces are eliminated. To also avoid unnecessary gaps in the width dimension, the 19” plane is already integrated into the vertical cabinet struts to both front and rear. When filled with 19” components such as measuring devices, amplifiers, equalisers and so on, the cabinet presents a highly attractive look even without cover trims, decorative frames or doors.

The various sub-assemblies mount flush with the cabinet frame. In many customer applications the front of the cabinet has no door so that the components can be directly accessed and operated. If required, however, a suitable steel or full-glass door can be supplied. There still remains sufficient space in front of the 19” plane, since this is recessed by 60 mm behind the front edge of the uprights. The platform basis also makes it possible e.g. to place an open cabinet beside a closed version (with door) and maintain a consistent appearance.

Tested for robustness

Electronics cabinets are subjected to various static and dynamic loadings both during delivery and when at their service location. Despite its lightweight construction, the Novastar demonstrates high robustness and can accept a static load of 400 kg. The cabinet has been tested to IEC 61 587-1: all tests conducted under this standard are performed on empty cabinets in order to allow comparison between standard products. The standard defines the basic requirements for the mechanical robustness (static and dynamic) of standard products. For cabinets the objective of the mechanical tests, for example, is to ensure safety in handling during manufacture, storage, system construction and operation. The static loading tests performed on cabinets and frames include lifting tests as well as rigidity tests to different requirement classes.

Ease of assembly and making changes

Also important for an electronics cabinet is ease of assembly. As a rule, cabinets can be supplied both in kit form or fully assembled. In all cases, the cabinet can be assembled easily without the need for expensive special tools or excessive amounts of time.

The doors of the new cabinets feature an innovative hinge concept that gives an opening angle of 180°. The door can also be removed and set to be left or right hand hinged. The new type of quick-release fasteners on the side panels are designed such that they can serve as carrying handles on smaller sizes of the cabinet. Castors with built-in adjustable feet make the cabinet ideal for mobile use in the laboratory. A groove in the side of the frame can be used for mounting support arm systems for a monitor or other accessories. Fixed or pull-out shelves, slide rails and other accessories offer flexibility in configuring the cabinet.

Since heat dissipation is relatively small in control and instrumentation and audio/video applications, natural convection is sufficient in many cases. Where required, however, Novastar can also be equipped with one of several ventilation solutions such as a raised cover with or without a fan unit or 19” fan trays.
