EOH makes a mint
March 2010
IT in Manufacturing
EOH Mining and Manufacturing has been entrusted by the SA Mint Company with the implementation of an MES (manufacturing execution system) solution for its coin manufacturing facility. The MES will replace a legacy system and cater for new business and production processes.
As one of only two companies in South Africa legally entitled to ‘make’ money, the other being The SA Bank Note Company, SA Mint bears a unique responsibility for delivering high quality products consistently, on time and in large volumes.
To achieve this, the company was looking for an MES solution that would be able to integrate with a material handling system, PLCs and scada systems, a document management system and the company’s SAP ERP system. That solution materialised in the form of the Wonderware MES product whose first phase implementation at the mint is due for completion in July 2010.
Project scope
The scope of this implementation can best be described by the information that it will have to produce:
* Equipment performance management.
* Production accounting and traceability.
* Die management: summarised and detailed.
* General reports.
“SA Mint wants a system that will provide material traceability, ensure data integrity and provide a solution that is flexible enough to accommodate changes in our manufacturing environment,” says André de Beer, head of factory systems. “The system must also assist with inventory optimisation by providing information about the availability and location of inventory items. We are looking forward to far greater visibility into our KPIs as the system facilitates production flow without compromising control or security.”
