New range of versatile and user-friendly inverters is launched

October 2001 Motion Control & Drives

Siemens recently launched its Micromaster family of inverters. Guests were treated to an entertaining presentation where they were introduced to this well-engineered range of electric motor drive inverters.

The new Micromaster 420/440 devices are intended to make operation as simple as possible. The power output of the 420 model ranges from 0,12 to 11 kW, the 440, in contrast, from 0,12 to 75 kW - with a VT rating of up to 90 kW in the case of pump and fan applications. Individual configuration, installation, connection and start-up has been made simpler.

Installing the Micromaster 420/440 is easy. The connections for the control cables are screwless and the labelling of the connecting terminals is similar to that of the preceding models, which it replaces. The cooling system allows inverters of the whole power range to be installed without any spaces at the sides. The units (size A) with low power outputs can be snapped onto standard DIN mounting rails.

The Micromaster 440 is the top model among the frequency inverters in the series. Its improved vector control employs fast-reacting inputs, enabling precise start/stop, eg for simple positioning. Even slow reversing processes become easy. The integrated brake chopper allows Siemens' most powerful unit (up to 75/90 kW) to offer braking and deceleration times that are of the best available.

When installing, the connecting system is easily accessible and the coloured markings of the input/output terminals are simple and straightforward. The communication modules only have to be plugged in and installation is complete. On request, the unit will automatically detect the plugged-in option modules and will carry out the necessary basic setting.

The 440's speed/frequency controller/torque-controlled operation ensures that this model is suitable for a wide variety of applications. The numerous inputs and outputs, as well as the free method of interconnection (BICO method) results in a great level of flexibility. The vector-controlled unit is suitable for all typical output frequencies and voltage ranges worldwide.

Offering high availability the inverters remain safe even in electrically noisy environments, where Siemens guarantee interference-free operation. Rapid current limitation and reliable overload monitoring functions contribute to the high operational safety. The 440 can cope with double the rated output current for 3 s within a period of five minutes.

The inverters are modular. The modules for options, eg for communication, are plugged in when required. Customers do not pay for what they do not need. Siemens has obtained all the important approvals required all over the world and included the important protection functions such as overload capability, overvoltage/undervoltage protection and over temperature, motor and stalling protection.

Micromaster can be integrated in normal communication landscapes, simply by plugging in the corresponding communication module. Micromaster was designed to function anywhere in the world. It can cope with temperatures of -10 to +50°C and humidity of up to 95% without any power loss. It comes with all the usual approvals worldwide.

Added functionality includes:

* Compound braking which enables controlled braking without brake resistors.

* PI controller for simple process control in the closed-circuit control mode.

* Automatic adaptation of acceleration and deceleration times when current and voltage limits are reached. This avoids unnecessary emergency shutdown.

* Automatic restarting functions after a power failure or fault.
