Flowmeters in UHP water treatment

Flow Measurement & Control
GEMÜ offers flowmeters operating according to most of the known physical measurement principles, which include variable area, magnetically inductive and ultrasonic types. All have their particular features and benefits, but the selection of the right type of flowmeter depends on the application and process parameters.
Variable area flowmeters of the type 800, 840 and 850 provide simple operation and a high level of accuracy. A large measuring range – up to 50 m3/h – is available and flow of all kinds of liquid mediums and gases can be measured. Depending on the metering tube material, which can be polyamide, polysulfone, PVC or PVDF, operating pressures up to 15 bar and temperatures from -20 – 100°C can be handled. Reading of the scale is easy thanks to clear and large printing. Over 500 standard scales and 13 000 special ones cover most applications. Variable area flowmeters can be fitted with limit switches or instrument sensors, which make them suitable for use in automation applications as well.
Ultra-high purity (UHP) water
A highly specialised field of application for flow measurement is found in the production of ultra-high purity (UHP) water.
The quality of the high purity water used in facilities producing semiconductors is of paramount importance. For wafer production, the quality of ordinary high purity water is not sufficient with regard to particles and harmful ions, as the number of residual molecules contained in the medium is too high. Therefore, the water requires further purification. The water is circulated in a ring main to prevent contamination and unused water is conveyed back to a buffer container and retreated. The amount of water used is replaced by adding pre-purified water.
The additional purification process is carried out by using a polisher and secondary ultra-filtration. The polisher is an ion exchanger filled with a special resin, while the secondary ultra-filtration washes out residual particles as well as germs and other unwanted molecules. The distribution of the ultra-purified water to the different production areas takes place in a closed system running at a pressure of 4,5 bar.
In such a complex process, where all the different flows must be kept in equilibrium in an ultrapure contamination-free environment, GEMÜ variable area flowmeters in PVDF-HP are found in large numbers.
Depending on the application details and operating conditions, GEMÜ´s team of specialists assist users to find the best solution. This ensures benefits like high quality combined with an optimal cost-performance ratio.

Loop signature 29: Averaging or surge level control
Editor's Choice Flow Measurement & Control
There are many processes where it is undesirable for the load to suddenly change quickly, for example in the paper industry. Examples of level control have involved reasonably fast tuning. An example of a level loop tuned this way and responding to a step change in setpoint is given.
