SMC announced as new co-sponsor of 2016 PneuDrive Challenge

December 2015 News

With the 2015 PneuDrive Challenge nearing its conclusion, SEW-Eurodrive is proud to announce that it has teamed up with its new partner, SMC Pneumatics South Africa, to co-sponsor the 2016 event.

The main aim of the PneuDrive Challenge is to provide mechanical, electronic and mechatronic engineering students with a learning platform where they can bring together their understanding of engineering theory, the latest technology in drive engineering and pneumatics, and explore how their ideas could become a business reality.

SMC Pneumatics South Africa general manager Adrian Buddingh indicates that the company is committed to providing students with learning skills in innovative design applications and solutions across interrelated disciplines.

“The competition is what engineering students need, as system integration is not often fully realised at university level. It provides a platform for students to bring together their understanding of engineering theory, the latest drive engineering technology and pneumatics for real-life situations,” he notes.

Buddingh states that it is not easy for companies to align their corporate social responsibility with their own core business operations. “The competition provides learning skills that cannot be acquired within the context of a traditional four-year academic degree. We are confident that we can achieve this through the PneuDrive Challenge.”

Commenting on the new partnership, SEW-Eurodrive managing director, Raymond Obermeyer adds: “We believe strongly in the merits of the PneuDrive Challenge and the long-term effects it will have on our industry. We are looking forward to the new partnership with SMC and their contribution to the competition going forward.”

The theme for the 2016 PneuDrive Challenge is expected to be announced before the end of 2015. The winning team will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Europe where students will present their design at the head offices of the two sponsor companies. They will also afford their university an opportunity to claim R100 000 worth of sponsor products.
