12 channel thermocouple compensating module
August 2015
Temperature Measurement
This unit was designed to replace the old 12 way unit which comprised a heated block with reference thermocouples imbedded into it, and maintained at 70°C. It was used in applications where it was deemed to be uneconomical to run long lengths of compensating cable and is still currently used in some installations.
This new unit can be supplied as just the circuit board for mounting into the existing chassis or complete with the chassis as a replacement module. Two versions are offered for use with either type K or type T thermocouples.
Each channel has a separate power supply and temperature sensor to prevent interaction between the different thermocouples.
The compensating module uses either a PT100 or a Ni100 sensor to measure the cold junction temperature (at the terminal block) and generates a temperature dependant mV signal which is added to the thermocouple signal. The offset has the same effect as the 70°C reference thermocouple used in the older units. Typical accuracy is 0,5°C over the ambient range of 0-70°C.
A SPDT relay is powered by one of the power supplies. This relay is energised when power is applied to the module and can be used to signal a loss of power. In the event of a power failure the offset becomes zero, which is the same as the old unit.
