Remote monitoring of essential laboratory conditions
April 2015

A large South African stainless steel mill commissioned Define Instruments to provide a solution for monitoring the essential temperature and humidity conditions within its laboratory.
The application required the installation of a datalogger with SMS alarming functionality. The Define’s ZEN-16 was chosen to collate the data as its 16 channels could easily accommodate the multiple signal inputs from the laboratory’s temperature, humidity and AC current sensors.
The ZEN was configured to drive a modem and send SMS alarms to warn the user whenever temperature conditions inside the laboratory exceeded the safe limit. Three of the sensors were at difficult wiring locations and so two of Define’s Twin Link wireless point-to-point units were utilised to transmit the sensor signals to the Zen-16.
Define Instruments’ CEO, Anthony Glucina says of the application: “The number of signals, along with the challenging locations of three of the sensors, meant it was an ideal opportunity to combine the capabilities of both our Zen and wireless Twin Link units for optimal results.”
