Enhanced communication with ABB’s UMC100.3

As the industrial Internet develops at an ever-increasing pace, the ability for control devices to interface over a number of protocols and interface types becomes ever more crucial. Nowhere is this more evident than in the area of motor control. ABB’s universal motor controller, the UMC 100.3, provides a solution in this space that offers comprehensive, electronic motor protection, ensuring that the motor is protected at all times, even if the control system or fieldbus fails.

The UMC 100.3 is a flexible, modular and expandable motor management system for constant speed, low voltage motors. The precise electronic measurement system enables optimal utilisation of the motors. Constant trip behaviour is ensured by high long-term stability of the tripping characteristics, coupled with a comprehensive diagnostics system that provides fault-localisation and rectification in instances where faults occur.

Operational as well as service and diagnostic information

Continuously transmitting comprehensive operational, service and diagnostic data from the motor to the control system means that the UMC 100.3 facilitates early fault detection, potential damage is avoided by suitable measures or the extent of the damage can be limited. This is all achieved by an open communication system. The controller is equipped with an interface for mounting a communication adaptor, making communication, via Ethernet possible using the Modbus TCP or Profinet protocol and the widespread Profibus DP, DeviceNet or Modbus RTU. Ethernet based communication systems are leading the way and are increasingly used as the preferred technology.

Up to four controllers can be connected to one Ethernet interface MTQ22 or PNQ22 by using simple serial connection cables. An integrated switch supports the usage in different network topologies; star, bus and ring.

The UMC 100.3 is suitable for any kind of serial communication; resulting in the time needed for planning, project engineering, development and maintenance being dramatically reduced. The application of intelligent motor management systems provides a wide selection of motor status information in full text format on the operator panel.

For most applications it is sufficient to select and parametrically assign one of the standard integrated functions. This is achieved by means of GSD and EDS configuration files, or even more conveniently, via a DTM device (DTM/FDT technology). All of the parameters can be configured via the control station.

For special applications, it is possible to create an optimally adapted control function with the help of the editor integrated into the DTM, where a comprehensive library of function-blocks are available for this purpose. All of the existing variables in the UMC 100.3 and the expansion modules can be accessed and comments can be inserted as required. Control functions integrated into the UMC 100.3 are available as templates and can be adapted to specific requirements with ease.

The UMC 100.3 provides communication and control for a wide range of commercial, industrial and agricultural users.
