Product tracking is an important issue for manufacturers, logisticians and retailers, and the new variant of the DTE800 series UHF RFID system from ifm electronic has been well received. Operating on the 865-870 MHz band, this new system provides flexibility on a standard platform. New to the DTE800 series is the robust DTE810, which is equipped with an Ethernet/IP interface to transmit data to the plant control.

Antennas with various ranges are available. The more compact ultra-low and low range antennas can read tags in close proximity without seeing adjacent tags, making them the most selective. The mid-range antennas can pick up data from a tag up to 2 m away, while the long range option can read a tag at 7 m.

Bulk reading of standard tags is also well within the capability of the new system, which is based on ISO 18000-6C, EPC, Global Class 1 Gen 2. The information read from the tag is communicated through a simple Ethernet IP standard interface. The software for configuring the reader, which can have up to four antennas attached, is supplied with the reader unit. Parameters are set up via an Ethernet TCP/IP connection.

Further integration into an automated system is possible through coordinating input and output signals on the reader. A read sequence is triggered by an external event, and sorting carried out directly via the DTE read unit. The units, reader and antennas are supplied in an industrial IP65 housing with standard industrial connectors. A selection of co-axial leads for the antennas, Ethernet patch cords and M12 power and I/O connectors form part of the overall package.
