Mandela School opens in South Africa

February 2014 News

The Mandela School of Science & Technology, which was financed and built by Siemens, has now opened in Nelson Mandela’s birthplace of Mvezo, South Africa. As the region’s first high school, the facility will provide up to 700 children and young people with access to secondary education. The curriculum is focused on technology, the natural sciences, engineering and agriculture. “With the construction of a school in his birthplace, Siemens is fulfilling a wish of Nelson Mandela’s,” said Siegmar Pröbstl, CEO of Siemens South Africa, at the school’s opening. The school is a testament to Nelson Mandela’s conviction that education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world.

Guest of honour at the opening ceremony was South African President Jacob Zuma. “I am honoured to be part of this opening ceremony of the Mandela School of Science & Technology. It is the first school of its kind in Mvezo, for secondary education and fully-equipped for studies in science and technology. Siemens is giving the learners of Mvezo and this region the opportunity for the education that Nelson Mandela has dreamt of,” said Zuma.
