Using the new Hirschmann IS2 installation switch, users can now implement an entire infrastructure for data and voice transmission over a high performance fibre optic network that does away with separate telephone wiring.

IS2 is a flat fibre-to-office switch that snaps quickly into standard cable ducts without requiring tools or a special frame, thus reducing installation time and costs. It allows devices such as PCs, laptops and printers to be connected via twisted pair cables and all data to be relayed via a fibre optic uplink. This concept delivers higher performance than structured cabling, while at the same time reducing the costs. The Gigabit technology also supports voice transmission, making it possible to merge data and telephone networks and, thanks to PoE+, devices such as IP cameras and WLAN access points can simultaneously be powered via the data line. A range of management, redundancy and security functions and various configuration and diagnostic tools ensure reliable and convenient operation.

Benefits

The switch’s snap-in mechanism means neither tools nor frames are required for fitment. Furthermore, it is recognised automatically when put into service, which provides maximum network transparency. Users can also connect IP telephones via PoE+ without needing any additional power, which allows the entire data and voice infrastructure to be integrated in one fibre optic network. Such a network gives fast access to new technologies without having to change cabling, thus ensuring long term protection of technology investments.

The IS2 allows flexible and future proof connection of devices to in-house cabling. To this end, the switch features a fibre optic uplink (100/1000 BaseX SFP), a copper downlink (10/100/1000 BaseTX) and four twisted-pair ports (10/100/1000 BaseTX) that support PoE+. Additional switches can be cascaded via the copper downlink allowing redundant, high-availability network structures to be implemented. The PoE+ function can provide up to 30 W for each attached terminal device, up to 60 W in total depending on the output of the power supply.

The IS2 installation switch is particularly suitable for use in building complexes such as hotels, hospitals and airports, since it allows large distances to be bridged with ease. In addition, the high performance of a fibre optic network is ideal for transmitting both data and voice, enabling economical office communication solutions to be implemented on a long service life technology platform.
