Richter valves transport hazardous corrosives

July 2013 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

The amount of dangerous corrosive liquids being transported is steadily increasing. PFA lined valves and pumps, fixed to road and rail tankers and containers, are helping to ensure the safety of roads, rail and waterways.

The European standard DIN EN 14432 ‘Tanks for the carriage of dangerous goods – equipment for tanks for the carriage of liquid chemical products: product shut-off and gas exchange valves’ has now been in force since January 2011 and all equipment must adhere to this standard.

Flanged and wafer design PFA-lined Richter ball valves are suitable for use. Richter’s fully lined ball valves fig KN/F and KK/F have been type-approved according to DIN EN 14432 by TUEV. They are ideally suited for use on road tankers, tank wagons and transport containers and comply with the German Clean Air Act (TA Luft). PFA/PTFE-lined butterfly valves are used on acid tank ships. Further examples are PFA-lined diaphragm valves as filling and drain valves on special bromine containers and PFA-lined magnetic drive pumps on road tankers for faster unloading.

The integral PFA fluoroplastic lining has many advantages in that it is more corrosion resistant than the alternative materials of Duplex, Hastelloy, PVDF, ETFE and even titanium and nickel. It is an anti-adhesive vacuum resistant lining which is easy for clean in place and can be also used for high-purity and for solids-laden fluids with large temperature ranges from up to -60 to 200°C. Lead times are short and the prices significantly lower than specialty metal pumps and valves.

The Richter range of sealless magnetic drive centrifugal pumps are fitted with integral PFA lining and are equipped with a hydraulically optimised closed impeller. The pumps are also hermetically tight with no rotary shaft seal, thus requiring minimal maintenance.

Besides the European regulations, Richter ball valves BVA and KA-N have been certified by the AAR (Association of American Railroad) in the USA.
