Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Endress+Hauser analytical instrumentation at Ras Al-Khair

April 2013 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Ras Al-Khair is a town and port currently under development on the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia 60 km north of Jubail. It will consist of a power plant supplying an aluminium smelter, various chemical plants and a desalination plant. The Korean engineering company Doosan, experienced in desalination projects since 1978, was awarded a general contract for the desalinisation project.

Within this project, Endress+Hauser will provide all of the analytical instrumentation, from simple pH and conductivity measurement for monitoring the reverse osmosis process to the complex determination of the silt density index (SDI) of the seawater intake.

Ras Al-Khair: the facts

* Owner: SWCC (Saudi Arabian state-owned water distribution company).

* General contractor for the desalination plant: DHIC Doosan Heavy Industries.

* Total analytical package project volume for Endress+Hauser: &$8364;1 million.

* Additional Endress+Hauser instrumentation: flow.

* Total capacity of desalinated water: over 1 million cubic metres per day – supply for local industry and residents but also for the capital, Riyadh, via a 500 km pipeline.

Endress+Hauser will install the following instrumentation in the seawater intakes, multi-stage flash desalination processes, reverse osmosis desalination processes and post-treatment of desalinated water processes:

* 111 x conductivity.

* 52 x pH.

* 4 x ORP.

* 50 x turbidity.

* 16 x free chlorine.

* 12 x total chlorine.

* 9 x DO.

* 2 x hardness.

* 3 x alkalinity.

* 3 x oil-in-water.

* 3 x SDI.

The instrumentation will be distributed across five container measuring stations, 95 enclosures and 120 panels.
