Honeywell scada and PKS used in gas pipeline control centre

Japan’s Inpex Corporation will implement Honeywell’s Experion Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (scada) and Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) in its new pipeline control centre which will process natural gas from domestic and overseas sources for local distribution and consumption.
Experion scada will be used to integrate and manage data coming from more than 160 monitoring and control stations along a 1400 km gas distribution network spanning nine prefectures. It will also be used to manage the delivery of gas to homes and businesses in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The software’s ability to handle multiple servers and switch over to a standby server in case of failures will enable Inpex to continue operations safely and without disruption in the event of equipment or system failures.
Inpex manages the production of natural gas from Minami-Nagaoka field, which accounts for about 40% of Japan’s total natural gas production. With the growing demand for natural gas in Japan ranging between 2,5 to 3,0 billion cubic metres annually, Inpex plans to tap gas from overseas to supplement the domestic demand. The company’s new liquefied natural gas terminal and pipeline control centre in the Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture will support this plan and become operational in 2014.
