Siemens introduces new WirelessHART field devices

December 2012 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Siemens has introduced two fully wireless field devices into its WirelessHART product portfolio: the Sitrans TF280 for temperature and the Sitrans P280 for pressure. Their integrated batteries have an average service life of five years. To complement the WirelessHART field devices, Siemens also supplies the Sitrans AW200 WirelessHART adaptor. This can integrate conventional HART devices with wired HART communication, along with 4 to 20 mA pure analog devices, into a WirelessHART network, allowing these devices to be connected wirelessly.

The Sitrans AW200 can also supply a connected device with power so that wires can be completely eliminated. This is provided by the battery pack using intelligent power management to ensure that the connected device can be put into ‘sleep’ mode when it is not required, but can be ‘woken up’ at regular intervals or whenever it is needed for a measurement.

Product features

* Flexible mounting of the devices.

* Reliable communication with the control system.

* Quick commissioning and efficient maintenance.

* Wireless communication allows measurements to be made in inaccessible locations.

Benefits

Knowing the value of process parameters that were previously difficult or impossible to measure, for instance on large rotating machinery or at distant locations, gives greater flexibility and dynamic intervention in the production process. This not only assures product quality, but also increases productivity. Work sequences can consequently run in quicker succession, avoiding dead times. Maintenance costs, for instance changing the batteries, are more than offset by the increases in productivity and efficiency, installations often pay for themselves in as little as a few months. In many plants, the new applications made possible using WirelessHART technology have added significant value for the owners beyond just the saving on cables and installation.
