The purpose of the annual Cyber Junkyard industrial inter-tertiary competition is to foster ongoing developmental relationships between industry and education in southern Africa. The competition serves to address the skills shortage in the region by providing an exciting, modern and real-world platform for the development of young, technically skilled people, and the empowerment of the engineering faculties of educational institutions. This is facilitated through sponsorship and exposure of students and lecturers to cutting-edge industrial equipment, software tools and training in these new technologies. Alongside this delivery is the creation of opportunities for institutions to showcase their talent and build productive networks with representatives of leading industries.
The theme of each year’s challenge is chosen to reflect the latest trends in high-tech manufacturing and automation industry sectors, together with a reflection of socially relevant topics eg, energy saving.
At the 2012 event, held alongside the Siemens Partner Awards, the objective was to build an automated warehouse stacking system. The project involved implementing the latest advances in motion technology in a user-friendly concept for an autonomous, intelligent stacking solution. Institutions were sponsored with equipment from Siemens, Festo and Lapp Kabel.
