Level Measurement & Control

Cooling water in the foundry

November 2012 Level Measurement & Control

The cooling water for the furnaces of a foundry is collected in a pit for treatment, however, it has not been easy to find the right measuring sensors for such applications. Level data from ultrasonic sensors are not reliable enough due to interference from steam and the temperature difference between the transducer and the water surface and temperature measurement using separate Pt 100 probes would mean additional installation and maintenance costs.

Vega was approached by a foundry to find an efficient measuring system with one sensor for both measured variables. The best option turned out to be its suspension pressure transmitter the Vegawell 52. Due to its hydrostatic measuring principle, the measurement data is not affected by steam. The front-flush ceramic measuring cell also means it is protected from debris and build-up.

By installing Vegawell 52, this foundry ensured the required measurement certainty. The built-in, protected Pt 100 sensor enables temperature measurement in parallel to the level measurement. The temperature data is also used to compensate for density changes caused by fluctuations in water temperature, which can range between 25 and 80°C. This saves having to install additional temperature sensors.

The user benefits derived from the installation were many. The furnaces cool more reliably thanks to accurate measurement of the cooling water. Cost-effectiveness was achieved through the use of one sensor for both level and temperature measurement, only one connection cable was required for two different measured values and the sensor mounting was done simply by hanging it from a bracket at the measuring point.
