Safety tools tested to EN 60900.2004

July 2012 Enclosures, Cabling & Connectors

Haupa offers a range of safety tools which include cable cutters, hydraulic cable cutters, wire stripping tools, crimping tools, mechanical and hydraulic pliers for terminals, hydraulic crimping tools, ring terminals, socket sleeves, screwdrivers, socket wrenches, pliers, cable knives and voltage testers.

All Haupa’s red insulated tools are subjected to routine tests in accordance with VDE Norm 1000 V IEC 60900.2004. Power in electrical systems should be switched off prior to starting work, and in order to avoid electrical shocks, life-saving 1000 V tested insulated tools should be used. Haupa’s 1000 V labelled tools are tested for a sparkover resistance of 10 000 V, resulting in 10-fold safety for the user.

The tools are subjected to vigorous in-house testing. The toughness of the PVC material is checked by dropping a weight onto the tools after they have been cooled down to -25°C. They must not show any cracking or other damage after the test. To test the adhesive strength of the PVC coating, the tools have to be stored for 168 hours at 70°C and the adhesive power of the PVC coating is tested using a pulling force of 500 Nm. The insulation material must stay firmly attached to the basic tool. No punctures must occur while pressure testing the tool with a voltage of 5000 V AC when also applying a pressure of 20 Nm at a temperature of 70°C. To exclude any fire risks, only flame-proof PVC material is used.

All Haupa ‘working under tension’ products are provided with two different coloured insulation coatings where technically possible. The first insulating layer has a yellow contrasting colour, allowing damages to become immediately visible on the top red coating. This gives the user warning that the tool has to be replaced.
