Quality control supports efficient tissue production

October 2026 IT in Manufacturing

As tissue manufacturers face pressure to maintain consistent quality while reducing energy and raw material consumption, advanced quality control systems are giving operators greater insight into production processes.

Valmet is supplying two Valmet IQ Quality Control Systems (QCS) to Viet Nam KORO Paper Joint Stock Company for its new TM3 and TM4 tissue production lines in Thanh Hoa Province, Vietnam. The systems will support startup, stable production and consistent product quality, while helping to improve operational efficiency and optimise energy and raw material use.

The project builds on an established relationship between the companies. Valmet previously supplied a Valmet IQ QCS for KORO’s BM2 board machine, and the latest investment extends the technology into the company’s growing tissue operation.

Each new line will receive a complete Valmet IQ QCS incorporating the Valmet IQ Scanner, Valmet IQ Fiber Measurement and Valmet IQ Softness Measurement. Machine direction (MD) and cross direction (CD) controls will provide additional performance monitoring and process optimisation.

The QCS combines measurements, controls and optimisation applications to continuously monitor sheet properties and help operators maintain the required quality parameters. Detecting variations during production allows corrective action to be taken before these affect the finished product, helping to reduce off-specification production and improve resource utilisation.

The Valmet IQ platform is configurable for pulp, paper, board, tissue, non-woven and converting applications, ranging from standalone measurement solutions to comprehensive quality management systems. The latest generation is also compatible with the Valmet DNA automation system and features a web-based user interface designed to give operators easier access to critical process information.

Of particular relevance to tissue production is Valmet’s non-contact, nuclear-free quality control technology. Because tissue is lightweight and delicate, physical contact during measurement can increase the risk of web breaks. The system instead measures key properties in real time without touching the sheet and eliminates the need for radioactive sources traditionally used in some basis-weight measurements.

The technology provides continuous information on dry weight, basis weight, moisture, softness and creping behaviour, allowing control systems to respond rapidly to process variations. An advanced measurement-window cleaning system is designed to maintain reliable measurement performance in dusty production environments, including applications using recycled raw materials.

For KORO Paper, integrating these capabilities into TM3 and TM4 from startup will support rapid production stabilisation while maintaining quality and controlling energy and raw material consumption.
