Measuring more than two phases or interfaces that are not clearly defined presents several challenges for measurement technology. Depending on the process, one might encounter a transition layer that varies in height or very small differences in the densities of the individual phases. Additionally, buildup on the vessel walls or installations within the vessel is common in separation processes. Due to these and other challenges, some measurement technologies may not succeed. However, radiation-based measuring systems, such as Berthold’s EmulsionSENS, effectively address these problems. Reliable monitoring of the separation process leads to optimised residence times and reduced consumption of chemicals, such as antifoaming agents, ultimately resulting in cost savings.With Berthold‘s multiphase level measurement system EmulsionSENS, separating layers are reliably monitored and the dependent process can be optimally controlled. Several density measurements are installed on different heights, detectors mounted outside the vessel and sources inserted into a dip pipe to create a density profile of the vessel contents.
If the position and height of the individual phases are important, in addition to the density values of the vessel contents, the level of the phases can also be provided as an output. EmulsionSENS is available in two configurations: aligned and staggered. This system can be applied in various settings, including desalters, hydrocrackers, free water knockouts, alkylation units, separators and storage tanks.
