Proconics was engaged to modernise automation and SCADA systems across a refinery tank farm. The project involved complex brownfield integration, aligning new automation with existing mechanical infrastructure and limited nozzle configurations, while maintaining production continuity during scheduled shutdowns.
Project Outcome
The project successfully delivered a fully modernised and compliant tank automation solution:
• Aligned with API 2350 and functional safety standards
• Maintained uninterrupted operational continuity during phased upgrades
• Enabled improved monitoring, performance insights, and long-term reliability
Biggest Challenge
The project presented three core challenges:
1. Complex Compliance Requirements — Upgrades had to meet API 2350 and functional safety standards, tailored to the refinery’s specific tank infrastructure.
2. Brownfields Integration — The new system needed to interface with legacy mechanical systems and limited nozzle configurations without causing operational disruption.
3. Shutdown Coordination — All work had to align precisely with the refinery’s tank maintenance shutdown schedule to prevent operational delays.
Our Solution
Proconics delivered a phased, carefully engineered solution:
• Conducted a full API 2350 compliance audit and selected technology appropriate for the site.
• Delivered a proof of concept during scheduled maintenance outages.
• Completed detailed engineering and executed a phased EPC rollout across the tank farm.
• Applied smart mechanical design principles, optimising nozzle usage to reduce mechanical impact.
• Integrated drone inspections to visualise tanks, validate designs, and support remote planning and project execution.
This approach ensured compliance, operational continuity, and a safe, efficient upgrade of the brownfield tank systems.
