SAIMC: Secunda branch

August 2016 SAIMC

Golf day

On 26 May, the branch held its annual golf day at Walker Park in Evander. The cold morning did not intimidate any of the players and everyone enjoyed the day immensely. In total there were 132 players, 12 water holes and more than R30 000 of prizes. Moore Controls was the winner of the day.

Thank you to all the sponsors of the day, without them the day could not have been a success. They are as follows: WIKA, Extech Safety Systems, Yokogawa, Moore, A.T. Technical Services, Lethabo Engineering, Endress+Hauser, JCI, DLM, Pinnacle Instruments, Swagelok, Honeywell, Metso Automation, Beckhoff, Vega Instruments, Dresser, Blanes, Highveld Technical Services, Valve & Automation, Ernest Lowe, Hatch and A&CS.

A special thank you to Honeywell for the novelty prizes, and to Endress+Hauser for the longest drive of the day prize.

Technology evening

On the evening of 2 June, Alan Docherty from Honeywell presented the topic ‘Virtualisation in Process Control’. The different levels of control system architecture were explained; Level 0 (field equipment), Level 1 (controller), Level 2 (operator), Level 3 (advanced process control including historical data), Level 3.5 (controlled access) and Level 4 (business management).

Alan mentioned the different computing challenges that we are faced with today:

• Operating systems are coupled to hardware.

• Applications are coupled to operating systems.

• User experience is coupled to the operating system and applications.

One of the main attractions of virtualisation is that these challenges can be eliminated. Virtualisation has the following computing advantages:

• Hardware and operating systems are segregated.

• Applications and operating systems are segregated.

• The client is stripped from the machine.

Dates to remember

All C&I related individuals are welcome to attend the branch Technology Events in 2016. The planned dates for the remainder of 2016 are as follows: 4 August, 1 September, 6 October and 3 November.
