Travel and money

May 2010 News

At the time that this issue is going to print, SA Instrumentation & Control’s editor Steven Meyer is accompanying Endress+Hauser’s 'Interkama Tour' to Hannover Fair 2010. Steven reports that the tour group managed to escape the travel-carnage caused by Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Steven will be back at the editorial helm in the next issue. A blog of the E+H tour can be viewed at http://www.blogs.endress.com/za-interkamatour.

A number of articles in this issue highlight the need for companies to minimise the impact that engineering upgrades have on normal operations. I have long voiced the opinion that engineering personnel need to have at least a reasonable understanding of business economics and finance. As much as we may love the technology and gadgets (ie, all the nice technological toys), technology does not drive business. Money drives business. If we do not willingly embrace an understanding of business finance, the bean counters will force us to comply anyway. We may as well embrace the understanding willingly.

This issue’s feature on ‘Mining, metals & quarrying’ carries reports on South African and international plant upgrades that were successfully implemented without disruption to existing operations.

Our ‘IT in manufacturing’ feature continues to draw attention from both our online and print readers.

With the massive government expenditure that is facilitating the upgrade of our road networks, you may have wondered if we are getting value for money ie, how are road quality tests performed. If so, you will probably enjoy the article ‘Road testing South African style’ on page 82.
