Most Modbus RTU field devices were never built to talk to the internet. The Sielco Sistemi SS10680 series of isolated gateways, available from Vepac Electronics, addresses this without requiring any replacement of existing installed equipment.
The series also includes isolated serial converters and adapters that link standard PC ports (RS232 COM, USB and Ethernet) with the most popular communication interfaces of peripheral devices, including RS485, RS422, MPI and PPI. Full isolation guarantees safe operation even in demanding environmental conditions.
Three gateway models are available:
• SS10680-IOT-LOG: MQTT cloud publishing plus local USB datalogging.
• SS10680-MOD-LOG: reliable local logging to USB and FTP, without cloud connectivity.
• SS10680-MOD: a straightforward Modbus TCP to Modbus RTU gateway.
All three models connect over Ethernet or Wi-Fi, a flexibility that many competing Modbus gateways do not offer, and share full galvanic isolation between the serial and network sides, protecting against the electrical noise typical of industrial plants.
IoT Modbus/MQTT gateway datalogger
The SS10680-IOT-LOG is an industrial device designed for data acquisition systems operating on IoT principles. It features an RS485 serial interface for Modbus RTU master communication, and an Ethernet/Wi-Fi interface for Modbus TCP master, FTP and MQTT protocols. Variables acquired from Modbus slave devices are transmitted to the cloud via MQTT using SSL/TLS client certificate authentication. Data can be sent either on variable change or at fixed intervals.
A web interface allows users to define sampled variables from any Modbus device or to select a preconfigured device from the built-in library. Acquired data can be stored on a removable USB flash drive through the datalogger functionality and retrieved remotely using FTP. The MQTT message structure can be configured to suit different MQTT brokers. Device configuration is performed via web interface and firmware can be updated remotely. Complete electrical isolation between lines eliminates ground loops and ensures effective protection against noise.
Modbus gateway with local storage
The SS10680-MOD-LOG is designed for data acquisition systems requiring local data storage. It features an RS485 serial interface for Modbus RTU master communication, and an Ethernet/Wi-Fi interface for Modbus TCP master and FTP protocols. Variables read from Modbus slave devices can be recorded on a removable USB flash drive and retrieved remotely via FTP. The device can also operate as a Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP gateway. As with the other models in the series, complete electrical isolation eliminates ground loops and provides protection against industrial noise.
Modbus TCP/Modbus RTU isolated Wi-Fi gateway
The SS10680-MOD allows all Modbus RTU devices on an RS485 network to be connected to an Ethernet/Wi-Fi network using the Modbus TCP protocol. An integrated web interface allows configuration of Modbus TCP parameters, such as IP address and subnet mask, as well as Modbus RTU parameters including baud rate and timeout. A reset button returns the device to factory settings. Ethernet activity LEDs and serial line data flow LEDs provide convenient monitoring of system operations. Complete electrical isolation between lines eliminates ground loops and protects against industrial noise.
The SS10680 series forms part of Sielco’s broader IOlog range of industrial I/O and connectivity hardware.
