Welcome to a bumper issue of SA Instrumentation & Control!

This larger-than-normal issue of SAI&C coincides with the launch of the new look instrumentation.co.za website. The new site has been optimised, using some awesome cascading style sheets (CSS), to enable better functionality on a greater number of web browsers. Support for most portable browsers is now included, eg, those used on mobile phones, PDAs, and UIQ devices. If your particular browser does not render our site correctly, drop me an e-mail and we will see if we can accommodate your browser as soon as possible.

At present, Technews' webserver is serving more than 1 GB of traffic per day. This excludes adserving traffic, which is a similar amount of traffic.

Webserver statistics

By way of interest, recent statistics from our websites (compliments of Google's new Web Analytics system) show that Internet Explorer is still the predominant browser used by visitors to our websites, with a domination of more than 76%. Firefox is on the increase, with just over 18%. Considering the large number of 'techies' using our sites, this is not all that surprising.

More than 95% of our visitors use a Windows operating system, with more than 80% of those users using Windows XP.

51% of users have a video display size of 1024x276. The next largest size is 1280x1024 at 20%, a clear indication of the increasing use of 'decent size' displays. 800x600 has shifted down to less than 10%. The largest screen size reported is 1920x1200, used by less than 1%.

Connectivity

More than 50% of our visitors now connect via either DSL/Cable connection. 24% are still on some sort of dial-up (analog + ISDN). 12% connect from behind a corporate network. The single biggest ISP that connects our users, is Telkom SA Ltd.

Thanks

Lastly, our heartfelt thanks to our editorial contributors, advertising sales team, and production team that have helped get this mega-issue to your desktop on time, despite the recent spate of public holidays.

Our best wishes to SAI&C editor, John Gibbs, as he moves on to a new career in the stock market. Next month we will introduce our newly appointed editor to you. She is a 'force formidable' and promises to add massive value to our market-leading publication.
