Radar detection in harsh environments

August 2023 Sensors & Transducers

Turck Banner has introduced the new T30RW washdown radar sensor. This sensor offers the same powerful, reliable performance as the 15 metre T30R sensor, but it incorporates a heavy-duty IP69K-rated housing with a polypropylene sleeve over the barrel to protect the sensor in particularly harsh environments. It is well suited for high temperature, high-pressure washdown applications and offers excellent all-round chemical compatibility. It accurately senses targets and provides robust signal return, regardless of outdoor weather conditions, temperature changes, moisture, precipitation, sunlight, or darkness.

The T30RW can be used in tank level applications that may be too harsh for other sensors, such as chemicals or a clean-in-place tank. The polypropylene sleeve gives the T30RW uniform chemical compatibility and robustness against spray and damage.

The T30RW performs well in other tough environments like a car wash, where the signal can burn though steam and water spray to detect the target reliably. The T30R series of sensors excels in vehicle detection applications in harsh environments, both outdoors and also in enclosed areas like car washes. Radar allows car washes to operate reliably as intended: detecting when vehicles are in the correct position for wash cycles to begin, preventing machines from colliding with the vehicles, and signalling when drivers should exit after the wash cycles are complete. Radar sensors can also reduce wasted water and cleaning chemicals by properly indicating when to turn off automated processes.
